Stephen Hill unimpressive in NY Jets’ preseason finale against Eagles – New York Daily News

Stephen Hill drops a pass in what could ultimately be the wide receiver's final game with the Jets.Chris Szagola/AP Stephen Hill drops a pass in what could ultimately be the wide receiver’s final game with the Jets.

PHILADELPHIA ? Stephen Hill may or may not make the Jets as final cuts approach this weekend, but the wide receiver thinks the decision is a no-brainer.

When asked if he felt he deserved a spot on the team, the 2012 second-rounder said, ?Yeah. I don?t know why I shouldn?t.?

Hill donned a Jets uniform for what may have been the last time in Thursday night?s 37-7 preseason loss in Philadelphia, and failed to make an impact. The third-year player, who has been a disappointment thus far, had one catch for 13 yards on two targets, including a drop. If the Jets were looking for one last reason to keep Hill, they?re still looking. Hill is on the bubble, and Rex Ryan did nothing to dispel that notion after the game.

?We?ve got to really look at this tape and we?ll see if we have a (spot) one way or the other,? Ryan said.

The Jets must get their roster down to 53 by Saturday. Hill has only three receptions for 42 yards in four preseason games. When asked about the possibility that he might not make the team after a poor preseason and the fact that he was playing Thursday in a game in which most veterans sit out, Hill said, ?No disrespect but that?s the reason why they?re outside. They?re not in this locker room, they?re not playing.?

In a sentimental move, Ryan made Michael Vick the team?s lone captain on Thursday night at the QB?s old stadium. Vick started and took one snap, a handoff to Daryl Richardson. Afterward, the Jets called a timeout as Matt Simms entered the game and brought Vick a visor, which the former Eagle tipped to the crowd as he exited.

?(It was) very classy,? Vick said. ?You never know what to expect when you?re the opposition. It was very warm. I appreciate it. It?s a bittersweet feeling being back, but hey, it is what it is.?

Tajh Boyd entered the game in the third quarter and had his best performance in the preseason, completing seven of 12 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Boyd has had a tough training camp and preseason, and made an interesting comparison.

?That?s the thing, you really never know what to expect out of college,? Boyd said. ?You have this perception, it?s like when you play video games right? You?ve got your guys there from college, you trade them over to Madden and their ratings drop a little bit. But it?s actually that big of a leap.?

Simms played the first half but was unremarkable as he completed just seven of 17 attempts for 121 yards.

Tight end Chris Pantale had a big night, catching three passes for 74 yards. Pantale is unlikely to make the 53-man roster.

The Jets defense got pummeled, struggling badly to stop the Eagles backups. The Jets surrendered 276 rushing yards and 292 through the air. Not that the team played well on offense, either.

?It was a very poor performance by us,? Ryan said. ?It was just an awful performance.?

Linebacker Nick Bellore suffered a calf injury in the second quarter and did not return. Though not a starter, Bellore is a key special teams player. S Josh Bush (quad) and CB Johnny Patrick (head) also suffered injuries.?
