If someone offers you a good deal on a secondhand disc golf basket, buyer beware.
The basket from Hole No. 6 at Quarryview Park was stolen sometime Nov. 16, and local disc golf devotees are upset.
“A lot of people are kind of mad about it,” said Patti Wield, who with her husband Dennis operates The Shack at Vollrath Park.
The Wields have become the unofficial go-to people for anything related to disc golf in Sheboygan, including at Jaycees’ Quarryview Park.
“There’s a bunch of guys that play every single Sunday morning, they first noticed it,” Wield said. “Then we just kept getting calls all Sunday morning from people who were going there to play. The word does get around.”
The basket, which is worth about $400, was probably hauled out of the ground, pole and all, by a truck that someone drove onto the course just before the big hill, she said.
“We’ve reached over 4,000 people on Facebook about this,” she said. “I don’t know if that’s going to go anywhere or help. We’re just trying to get the word out, if anybody knows anything. Somebody knows something.”
This is the second time this has happened recently. In August of 2013, a disc golf basket vanished from the course at Vollrath Park, Wield said.
In that case, the Wields had a spare basket and were able to replace it right away. There are no more spares, so it’ll be up to the Jaycees and the city to decide what to do, she said.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Sheboygan Police Department at 920-459-3333 or the Wields at 920-208-0208. A reward will be offered for information that leads to the return of the basket.
Wield said she doesn’t know why anyone would want one disc golf basket.
“The only thing I can think of is we’re going to be watching Craigslist to see if someone’s trying to sell it,” she said. “Or, someone has property up north somewhere, and they’re stealing a basket to bring it up there.”
