After Kliff Kingsbury signing, Jets shouldn't have competition hiring their new head coach –

The Jets have interviewed eight candidates for their head coaching vacancy, and so far only one of them has been hired by another NFL team.

So the good news for the Jets is that with five NFL openings left and not a lot of other interest in the coaches they are pursuing, they shouldn’t have any competition for whomever they decide to hire.

The first of their interviewees was taken off the market on Tuesday afternoon when the Arizona Cardinals hired former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who had interviewed for the Jets job on Monday. The Jets have also interviewed former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, former Dolphins coach Adam Gase, former Colts and Lions coach Jim Caldwell, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Cowboys defensive backs coach Kris Richard, Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and they’ve spoken with Baylor coach Matt Rhule.

Of those, only Richard, Bieniemy and Monken have been interviewed by any of the other four teams still looking for a head coach – the Browns, Broncos, Dolphins and Bengals. Richard could still be in play for the Dolphins, but he’s not believed to be a serious candidate for the Jets’ job.

Here’s a look at the other head coaching searches around the NFL:

  • The Browns are reportedly choosing between their own interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and former Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski,
  • The Broncos are reportedly choosing between bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak
  • The Dolphins appear to be down to Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores or Richard. They also interviewed Bieniemy.
  • The Bengals’ search has been the hardest to read. Reportedly former Broncos coach Vance Joseph has emerged as a favorite in a wide open search that also included interviews with Bieniemy and Monken.

The other openings have already been filled with the Cardinals hiring Kingsbury, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hiring former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, and the Green Bay Packers hiring former Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur.
